Votes, Votes, Votes

I don’t know why I am such a sucker for design competitions, usually I’m completely against them, as are a lot of other web designers. However, lately there have been a couple logo design competitions running that I felt I had to enter. Why? Besides the fact that I enjoy designing things, I don’t usually get a chance to design many logos, usually it’s websites, so I thought I would give it a go. Yes I’m a geek.

Muti Logo Design Competition

Muti is a social bookmarking site inspired by Reddit and Digg but dedicated to content of interest to Africans or those interested in Africa.

Muti’s founder, Neville Newey has asked the public for a new logo design for his site. There have been numerous great submissions, and it is now up to you to vote for the one you like. Voting closes this Sunday at midnight. Visit Muti, register as a user (Very painless! Only a username and a password is required), cast your vote on the home page, and then have a look around the site.

Below is my logo design contribution.

SA Blog Awards Logo Design Competition

This year’s revamped blog awards site has some great new widget functionality. Unfortunately, it’s design has taken a bit of flack though, and numerous bloggers/blog readers have complained about it. Personally, I don’t think it is that bad, in fact my first impression was I quite liked it, except for the powerpoint-looking logo text.

Quirk quickly responded to the comments by challenging the SA blogosphere to come up with a better logo design. Again, numerous logos have been entered, including an attempt by me.

SA Blog Awards Logo Design Competition

I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on the prize for this competition, an Apple TV. This competition is not open to voting from the public, a panel of judges have been appointed. Do have your say though on which logo you like, either on my site or on Quirk’s.

SA Blog Awards Nominations

Lastly, get voting for your favourite SA blog, you have until February 26th, that’s this Monday. Time is running out. Click on the little Blog Awards widget in my left menu to visit the site.

  1. Urgh, sorry they both make me queasy.
C’mon Forrester – put your gloves on and save us all from permanent blindness/brain damage!
I’m too knackered to try. I’d kick their asses. But i’m knackered 😉

  2. I think you need a good night sleep and should get cracking on some designs over the weekend 🙂

Queasy was the effect I was going for 😉

  3. Hey Mark, check out The Mail & Guardian’s photo site:

and then click on a photo. Check the “List on Muti” link =) Isn’t that your logo they’re using?

  4. I quite like both, the blog awards one being much better than my two attempts…

  5. Oh, I just noticed you “borrowed” your flame from Feedburner.com =) Cheeky 😉

  6. Peter: Well spotted on Mail and Guardian site. I like the way they have used it as a mini icon. I wonder if Neville has seen?

I did get a bit of inspiration from the feedburner logo, I’m surprised you are the first one to comment on that. I didn’t have much time on my hands when designing the logo, but if it were to be chosen, I think i would definitely play with the shape of the flame some more.

Martin: Glad you like the Awards logo, I loved the one you designed last year, where is your submission for this year’s awards?

  7. ok whoops, just incase you thought i was being a heinous bitch about your logos, i wasn’t. The official blog awards attempt makes me queasy. Very. Open mouth, insert other foot. I need to work on my tourettes. Sorry. I love you? Can i buy you a pony? A pint? 2?

  8. I’ll take the 2 pints! Pick me, Pick me!!! Is it Belgian? Hehe

  9. […] It was neck and neck the whole way with Mark Forrester playing a hard game, but in the end it was the late entry that came through for a convincing win. […]

  10. Haha no worries GW. I thought it may have been a case of me misunderstanding your tourettes again.

    WANKER.

(Note: Before another misinterpretation of a comment occurs, GW is not a wanker. Wanker was a word used rather frequently by the tourettes suffering Pete, winner of Big Brother.)

Congrats to Fred of Ideate for winning the battle. It was a close fought fight.

  11. […] Fred from Ideate won a close race to in the Muti logo competition. Coda, Mark Forrester and Fred all submitted brilliant work, with Fred’s edging out Mark’s at the end of the day on Sunday. That was a lot of fun to watch, and a big thanks to everyone who took part. […]

  12. […] The top two logos are # 13 and # 47 with 31 votes each so far. My choice is # 8 and is trailing far behind. (Sorry Mark, but it seems not to be at the rate the voting goes now…) […]

  13. Nicely done on both! I especially love the SA Blog Awards logo. 🙂 (and hey – congrats on making the finals as well)
